#girlsCan is a feminist project first implemented in Vienna, St. P\u00f6lten, and Graz in 2021. The project focuses on empowerment, solidarity, and mutual support among girls and young women. The project is grounded in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 5, which addresses the global issue of violence against girls and women as a human rights violation. In 2023, the #girlsCan project took place in Vienna in close cooperation with five facilities of the Verein Wiener Jugendzentren: JUST Wienerberg (10th district), Jugendtreff Arthaberbad (10th district), Back on Stage 10 + m\u00e4dchen*zone (10th district), Back on Stage 5 (5th district), and Flash M\u00e4dchen*caf\u00e9 (7th district). Through content-based and practical-artistic graffiti workshops, we collaborated with these youth centers on the topic of violence against girls and women. Topics covered in the content-based workshops included violence, self-determination, and developing strategies to combat gender based violence. Building on these workshops, we collaboratively created graffiti designs and sprayed them in public spaces with support from the media production company FrogQueenMedia, which produced a short film about the project.<\/p>\n

Building on this phase of the project, a zine was created for the target group. It serves as a lasting record of the project and provides important information and resources on gender based violence. The zine includes several contributions from the girls themselves, such as texts and collages. The project aimed to promote knowledge acquisition, reflection, and awareness of violence, ultimately empowering the participants through the acquisition of new artistic skills. Emphasis was placed on digitally communicating the results to make them accessible to as many people as possible. To this end, the project received continuous social media coverage and was promoted through a small social media campaign during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (16 Tage gegen Gewalt an Frauen<\/em>) from November 25 to December 10, 2023. As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the project results were presented at an online press conference. The project participants' voices and demands were given space in the press kit and short film. ORF Report, Wien Heute<\/em>, and \u00d61<\/em>, among others, reported on #girlsCan.<\/p>\n
